Amazon has written a lenthy and accurate description of the content of this book so I won't rehash it here. This book is simply excellent. It is clear, concise, and meticulously researched. A reader may be disheartened by Steyn's conclusions but the facts support his argument: the future belongs to Islam and a return to the dark ages unless there is a sea change in the consciousness of the West.
For a stable population, no growth, no decline, you need a total fertility rate of 2.1 live births per woman. It was a disconcerting choice of reading material. Europe as a whole has 1.38; Italy 1.2; Spain 1.1; Japan 1.32; Russia 1.14. His thesis is that the huge differential birth rate between Muslims and non-Muslims is leading to the (mostly) non-violent takeover of the civilized world by Muslims.
In Afghanistan for example it is 6.69.Let me provide two quotes, one from the Prologue and one from near the end of the book. For examples, by 2015 the majority of the Russian army will be Muslim. And right now, 10 out of 18 members of the ruling caucus of Brussels, Belgium are Muslims. I read "America Alone: The End of the World as We Know It" by Mark Steyn while we were traveling through Morocco, a country that is 98% Muslim. And maybe in the next war the giant will give up after 500, or 50, or not bother at all." ". Canada has 1.48.
Demographers call a fertility rate of 1.3 the "lowest-low" fertility, from which no human society has ever recovered. The Muslim fertility rate is much higher, somewhere north of 5.
America has the best, biggest, and most technologically advanced military on the planet. Steyn is a non-apologetic Conservative journalist from Canada, who writes with intelligence and humor about a very serious subject.
The first, on what we are doing to win the war on terror: "In Vietnam, it took 50,000 deaths to drive the giant (U.S). That (when you include Latinos) is what the U.S.
has. away; maybe in the Middle East it will take only 5,000.
(But) the minute you send it anywhere hysterical congressmen are shrieking that we need an `exit strategy'." The second quote, on political correctness: "When you persist in being sensitive to the insensitive, tolerant of the intolerant, and impeccably multicultural about the avowedly unicultural, don't be surprised if they take it for weakness." Steyn does suggest some realistic solutions, but you will have to read the book for yourself to discover them.
If America and Europe were anywhere close to the point of acting rationally with respect to wanting their citizens to understand the grave danger they are in from Islam, this book would be required reading in every high school, college and university.
Steyn is witty and persuasive. Few political observers weave facts, humor and trenchant observation like Mark Steyn. Brian Emerson is the perfect narrator for this audio book, since he conveys Steyn's barely-concealed contempt for religious fanatics, European sloths and Paul Ehrlich.
This book is a great eye-opener. It's entirely relevant to the time we all live in now. Until I bought this book, I was only familiar with Mark as a well informed and entertaining talk radio host. He is just as entertaining and thorough as an author, and he has taken a very serious subject and made an easy read of it.
